Why Does My AC Keep Freezing Up?

An AC that keeps freezing up may have restricted airflow, a dirty filter, evaporator-coil problems, blower issues, low refrigerant from a leak, or another condition causing the coil temperature to fall below its normal operating range.

Seeing ice on an air conditioner during a Florida summer can seem strange. The outdoor temperature may be extremely warm, yet the refrigerant line or indoor evaporator section is covered with frost. The explanation has more to do with airflow and heat transfer than outdoor weather.

A frozen AC should not be treated as normal operation. Ice blocks airflow, reduces cooling performance, and can lead to water around the indoor equipment as it melts.

Why Does an Air Conditioner Freeze When It Is Hot Outside?

How can an AC become too cold while the house is still warm? The refrigerant inside the evaporator coil absorbs heat from indoor air. The system is engineered so enough warm air continuously passes across that coil to keep temperatures within the proper operating range.

When heat transfer is disrupted, the coil can become cold enough for moisture to freeze on its surface. Once a thin layer of ice forms, airflow becomes even more restricted. More ice follows, creating a cycle that can eventually cover a significant portion of the coil.

Can a Dirty Air Filter Cause an AC to Freeze?

Is a clogged filter enough to cause this problem? In some cases, yes. A heavily restricted filter reduces return airflow through the indoor equipment. Closed or obstructed vents, blower problems, dirty coils, and other airflow restrictions can have a similar effect.

If your system is frozen, check whether the filter is obviously dirty and whether airflow from the vents had become weak before the icing began. An AC that is running but not cooling the house can sometimes be an early clue that airflow or heat transfer is deteriorating.

Can Low Refrigerant Cause the Evaporator Coil to Freeze?

Does low refrigerant make an air conditioner warmer or colder? Although it sounds counterintuitive, certain refrigerant conditions can cause the evaporator coil temperature to fall abnormally low and contribute to icing. Low refrigerant usually means the sealed system has a leak or another problem that should be diagnosed.

Refrigerant work should be left to trained HVAC professionals. Repeatedly adding refrigerant without finding the reason the charge is low does not resolve the root cause. A technician can measure system pressures and temperatures, inspect operating conditions, and determine whether refrigerant is actually involved.

What Should You Do When You Find Ice on Your AC?

Should you keep the system running so the house stays cool? Continuing to operate a heavily frozen air conditioner usually makes the ice worse. Turning off cooling allows the coil to thaw, although the blower may sometimes be used to help circulate air if the system can operate safely and there are no water or electrical concerns.

Be prepared for condensate as the ice melts. If you discover water around the indoor AC unit, monitor the area carefully and protect surrounding materials from damage. Do not try to chip ice off the coil because delicate components can be damaged.

Why Does an AC Freeze Again After It Thaws?

What if the system works normally for a while after the ice disappears? Thawing removes the symptom, not necessarily the cause. If airflow, refrigerant, blower, or coil problems remain, the evaporator can freeze again during the next cooling cycle.
